Custodial history:
At the time that these records begin, Stretford was a township in the parish of Manchester, in the county of Lancashire. Stretford’s Vestry members were responsible for appointing Overseers of the Poor, amongst other duties, such as the maintenance of highways and appointment of local constables. Following the 1834 New Poor Law, Stretford joined the Chorton-upon-Medlock Union when it was formed in 1837 and was later included in the new Barton-upon-Irwell Union when it was created in 1849. Stretford was represented by two Guardians.Following the Public Health Act of 1848 and the Sanitary Act of 1866, the Stretford Local Board of Health was formed, taking over the majority of the administration of the district. Their first meeting was held at the Town Hall on Wednesday 27 May 1868.Following the Local Government Act of 1894, Stretford Urban District Council was formed, taking over from the Local Board. The district comprised of six wards, each represented by three councillors. The first meeting took place at the Council Offices on Talbot Road, Old Trafford on 31 December 1894.On 1 April 1933, following the Lancashire (Manchester and District) Review Order of that same year, Stretford UDC gained 298 acres, consisting of part of Davyhulme, from Barton Rural District, and lost five acres to Urmston Urban District. Later that year, Stretford was granted a Royal Charter, making it a municipal borough on 16 September. The number of councillors increased from eighteen to twenty-four.Following the Local Government Act of 1972, Stretford was incorporated into the newly formed Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council in the municipal county of Greater Manchester. The Council formally came into existence on 1 April 1974.
