Following the 1894 Local Government Act, the Altrincham Rural District Council was formed in 1894 and was renamed Bucklow Rural District Council a year later. The newly formed council took over the duties of the Bucklow Highway Board and Altrincham Rural Sanitary Authority. The Council included the townships of Agden, Ashley, Aston by Budworth, Baguley, Bexton, Bollington, Carrington, Dunham Massey, Northern Etchells, Hale, High Legh, Marthall cum Warford, Mere, Millington, Mobberley, Northenden, Ollerton, Partington, Peover Inferior, Peover Superior, Pickmere, Plumley, Rostherne, Styal, Tabley Inferior, Tatton, Timperley, Toft and Warburton. Apart from those townships constituted as urban districts, the Bucklow Rural District followed the boundaries of the Altrincham Poor Law Union, which was established in 1836 and renamed the Bucklow Poor Law Union in 1895.In 1900, Hale was constituted as an Urban District Council. In 1920, the boundaries of Altrincham Urban District were extended to include parts of Dunham Massey and Carrington. In 1931 Baguley, Northern Etchells and Northenden were transferred to Manchester. In 1936, Timperley and an additional part of Dunham Massey were transferred to Altrincham. In that same year Styal was dissolved.In 1974 most of the area that made up Bucklow Rural District was incorporated into the new Macclesfield Borough Council. Carrington, Dunham Massey, Partington and Warburton were incorporated into the newly formed Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council, in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester.
