Custodial history:
At the point in time that these records begin, Altrincham was a township in the parish of Bowdon, in the county of Chester. In 1822, a ‘Select Vestry for the concerns of the Poor of this Township’ was formed and their first meeting was scheduled to take place on 1 May at the courthouse. In August 1836, following the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, the Altrincham Poor Law Union was established, containing forty townships from the parishes of Bowdon, Ashton-upon-Mersey, Great Budworth, Cheadle, Knutsford, and Rostherne. Altrincham was represented by two Poor Law Guardians on the Union’s Board of Guardians. A meeting was held in Altrincham to appoint the Guardians on 18 August 1836.Following the 1848 Public Health Act, the township requested that an inspector be sent by the General Board of Health to assist the town in adopting the Public Health Bill. Superintendent Inspector Robert Rawlinson’s report to the General Board of Health on conditions in Altrincham recorded that ‘there exists no local power to pave or cleanse the town, except under the general Highway Act; and no power whatever with regard to the new streets, as the Highway Act extends over one portion of the town only’. Altrincham’s Local Board of Heath was formed in 1851, taking over many of the governing duties of the town. The Public Health Act of 1872 divided the country into sanitary districts based on the poor law union boundaries. These consisted of both rural and urban sanitary districts: the rural districts consisting of those parts of the union not covered by an urban sanitary district. Altrincham formally became an urban sanitary district in 1875.Following the Local Government Act of 1894, Altrincham Urban District Council was formed and invested with the powers formerly held by the Local Board of Health. The first Urban District Council meeting took place on 15 December 1894. Altrincham was divided into five electoral wards: North, South, East, West and Central. The Altrincham Poor Law Union was renamed the Bucklow Poor Law Union in 1895 and Altrincham remained within this until 1930, when it was dissolved. The boundaries of Altrincham were extended in 1920 to include parts of Dunham Massey and Carrington. As part of this extension, an additional ward, the Dunham Ward, was created. In 1936, as part of a county review of the districts, Timperley and an additional part of Dunham Massey were included within the Council boundaries. In 1937, King George VI granted a Charter of Incorporation to Altrincham Urban District Council, making it a Municipal Borough. This was presented to the town on 31 July of that year by the Lord-Lieutenant of the County Palatine of Chester, Sir William Bromley-Davenport.Following the Local Government Act of 1972, the Borough of Altrincham was incorporated into the newly formed Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council. The Council formally held its first meeting on 1 April 1974.
