Four-year-old Shahaab has never spoken and his parents think he is an idiot. But his rich, interior life is rebellious and subversive. He sees things that adults do not - for example his cousin's illicit affair with a young man - which if she were caught would lead to her execution. And though his mother loves him, his father is stern and cold-hearted and his brother teases him mercilessly. Shahaab needs to take matters into his own hands if he is ever to be recognised as the intelligent, observant boy that he is - and ultimately to find his 'hidden' voice.
