The township of Timperley is probably Saxon in origin with the inhabitants mainly working in agriculture. By far the most important of the farms were Riddings Hall Farm and Timperley Old Hall Farm. Both halls were situated inside moats and the earliest mention of Timperley Old Hall is in a document of 1584. The Old Hall was replaced by a new building around the late 18th century. With the opening of the Bridgewater Canal in 1776 and the coming of the railway in 1849, Timperley began to expand, and around this time Mr Samuel Brooks, a Manchester businessman, began to buy land in Timperley for development. Brooks Drive and Woodlands Parkway were built by Samuel Brooks with many of the houses built occupied by Manchester manufacturers and mill owners. The expansion of the village led to more traffic on the roads, and tolls from turnpikes raised money for the upkeep of the roads. In Timperley, the turnpikes were on the main road through from Altrincham to Stockport. Timperley was administered by its own parish council until 1936 when it amalgamated with Altrincham Urban District Council. Images TL1511, TL0076 available on Trafford Lifetimes
