Overseers of the Poor - After the Poor Relief Act was passed in 1601, the relief of the Poor was administered by individual parishes through overseers. A workhouse for the poor of the township was built in 1756 at Broadheath.The land was given by the Earl of Warrington. The workhouse continued in use until the formation of the Altrincham Poor Law Union in 1835.On the building of a Poor House in Knutsford the workhouse was converted into cottages for letting for the workmen of the Trustees of the Duke of Bridgewater and were known by the name of "The Duke's Cottages".
