St George's Church, Altrincham built in 1799 but enlarged in 1858, its first incumbent was Rev.Oswald Leicester, whose philanthropic work was well known. In 1886 a chancel was added. It became the Parish Church of the Altrincham Court Leet, Mr.William Griffin who was Mayor in 1893-1894 being the first mayor to set the example of attending morning service on the first Sunday after the Mayor making, a custom which continued until the amalgamation with Trafford in 1974.
