Flixton Bridge with the Flixton obliterated, this was due to a meeting of the Air Raid Precaution Committee - 24th June 1940. Minute number 232 page 137. "Submitted letter from the Clerk to County Council requesting that immediate effect be given to an instruction of the Regional Commissioner that all location and direction signs be removed with the exception of those appertaining to shelters, first aid posts, fire stations and auxiliary fire stations." The clerk reported that the work of removing the signs was in progress. A newspaper article dated 1966 also relates to this story.
