The Manchester Ship Canal starts at the Mersey Estuary near Liverpool, and generally follows the original routes of the rivers Mersey and Irwell through Cheshire and Lancashire. Construction started in 1887 and the canal was officially opened on 21st May 1894 by Queen Victoria.
