The foundation stone for St Matthew's Church was laid on September 30th 1841 by Lady de Trafford. Sir Thomas Joseph de Trafford subscribed £100 towards the cost of the building and gave the land required. The site, known as Wagstaffe's Field, was near to the old chapel which had been formerly used for bear-baiting.
