Helen Allingham was born Helen Patterson in Swadincote in 1848, a year before her family moved to 16 Market Street, Altrincham in 1849. With her parents and six younger brothers and sisters she lived in Altrincham for 13 years before the family's happiness was destroyed by a diphtheria epidemic which killed her father, Dr. A. H Patterson, and her youngest sister, Isobel. After this tragedy the family moved to Birmingham where Helen, already painting at this time, was guided by her aunt, Laura Hereford, who aided her in developing her skill.
