James Bent was born in Eccles on February 3rd 1828 and his working life started at the age of seven in a silk mill. When he was 21 he joined the Lancashire Constabulary soon moving to Croft's Bank, Urmston, where he was stationed until 1858. In 1868, he was promoted to the rank of Superintendent of the Manchester Division.
