Moorfield House was originally built as a private residence during the latter half of the 19th century. It was a large Victorian mansion and gardens situated on Crofts Bank Road in Urmston. On the death of the owner Mr. George Fryer in 1930 the house was bequeathed to Urmston Urban District Council. It was utilised by the council as council offices and held the council chamber. A commemorative tablet was sited in the lawn near to the south west junction of the house which read "To perpetuate in affectionate memory the late George Ernest Fryer 0.B.E. M.R.C.S. L.R.C.P. Medical Officer of Health, Urmston 1898-1929 who bequeathed this house and grounds to Urmston". The neighbouring house, Arrandale, housed the Surveyor's department. Moorfield was destroyed by fire in the 1990s and in the 2000s the vacant land where the house once stood was used to build the new police station.
