ARP and civil defence in the Second World War
Doyle, Peter, 1960-2010
Book
In the late 1930s, when war seemed inevitable, the government established a volunteer organisation known as the ARP to stand at the centre of the wartime civil defence. During the war they distributed gasmasks, policed the blackout and played a vital role in shepherding people to shelter during air raids. This is their history.
