Market Place, Altrincham

Unknown[n.d.]
Archives
Printed drawing of Old Market Place, Altrincham on 1 December 1745; Vanguard of Prince Charles Edward's Army Demanding Quarters. Creator unknown. A typed note providing context states: 'During the 1745 rebellion, the cavalry of Bonnie Prince Charles' army arrived in Old Market Place on 1 December, looking for quarters. According to Nickson's 'Bygone Altrincham', some of the troopers stayed at the Red Lion, and others found billets at a farm near the site of St John's Church. The story goes that an innocent bystander watching the men and horses from his vantage point in Victoria Street (which was probably not called by that name then) was deprived of his stout boots by one of the cavalry men. Another story concerns the events of the following day when the troops were leaving to join the main force at Prestbury and Macclesfield. One of the Scottish was involved in a fight with the landlord of the Bleeding Wolf Inn. The unfortunate trooper was killed with his own sword, and was supposedly buried on Hale Road.'
