Extract taken from The Urmston Urban District Town Guide 1958 reads... " An estate that merits special mention is that at Woodsend, Flixton where the bulk of the Council's post-war housing has been carried on and a block of fourteen houses provided. This it is hoped, will in course of time have the characteristics of a neighbourhood unit developed in accordance with modern planning techniques. A feature of the estate is that part of it is district heated from a central boiler house. There are separately piped supplies of space heat (through radiators) and domestic hot water. The scheme was the first in England and Wales to approved by the district Heating Sub Committee on District Heating set up by the Ministers of Health and Fuel".
