The upper part of Kingsway was originally known as Stamford Street up to 1908. It was changed by petition to Kingsway, being the principal thoroughfare used by the King and Queen when Prince and Princess of Wales were on their way from Tatton Hall, as Lord Egertons guests, to Altrincham Station to open the Manchester Exhibition in 1887. The section of Kingsway opposite the Axe and Cleaver was known as Post Office Place.
