Lawrence Road, the estate built by Linotype to house its workers, has a distinctive character. The estate roads were named after various directors of the company, for instance Lawrence Road was probably named after Sir Joseph Lawrence, chairman and managing director. He later became a sherrif of London and an M.P. The estate is now a conservation area, its houses being preserved because of their historic interest to the area.
