St.Matthew's Parish Church Stretford was consecrated October 1842 by John Bird Sumner, Bishop of Chester. This building which did not include the chancel in 1842 cost £2,700 and provided seating for 556 persons in pews and 351 in free seats. The Lord of the Manor Sir Thomas Joseph de Trafford gave the land (a field called the wagstaff used for bear-baiting) and £100 to assist the building of the church.
