Cheshire Volunteers Lower George Street

[n.d.]
Archives
This photograph shows the junction of Station Road, now Kingsway and Lower George Street. Josiah Drinkwater, a member of a very old Altrincham family established his plumbing business in 1871 in premises built by another plumber, Geoffrey Wild. Josiah Drinkwater was one of the founder members of the Volunteer Corps established in Altrincham in 1859. No doubt he would have taken grat interest in the procession shown here of the 3rd Cheshire Volunteers on Kingsway, in Altrincham, marching to Tatton Park. This whole area was part of the redevelopment scheme in the 1970's. The building with the pointed gable in the middle of the photograph is the old Free Library that used to stand on Station Road.
