This building stood on this site until 1926 when Hardys' Crown Brewery Ltd applied to the local council to put up a new building. George Pye P.A.S.I. and Thomas Bennett F.M.S.A drew up the plans. After some revision, because the Licensing Magistrate thought '...the new elevations are to elaborate and would have to be more in keeping with the old building', work started in February 1926 the construction engineers on the project were C.L. Dale Ltd. of Hulme, Manchester.
