A voluntary hospital, it opened in 1853 as Lloyds Fever Hospital. It was joined by a Children's Dispensary in 1858 and a Provident Dispensary in 1861. Meanwhile the Altrincham Board of Guardians had built a central institution at Knutsford and had sold the Altrincham Workhouse land. The trustees of Altrincham Workhouse Charity decided to provide a new building for the Provident Dispensary and Hospital. The hospital opened in 1870 under new management as the "Altrincham Provident Dispensary and Hospital and Lloyd Fever Hospital". The latter section was transferred to the local board of health in 1877. The remainder was known as Altrincham General Hospital from 1935 onwards.
