HMS Boxer was the first of the stretched Batch II ships to enter service, being handed over from her builder in September 1983. The Boxer transferred to the 9th Frigate Squadron when it was formed in 1986. The ship's first commander was Capt. C. Cooke-Priest RN. The ship was "adopted " by Trafford in 1984. Councillor Jonathan Taylor and Mrs Barbara Taylor, the Mayor and Mayoress of Trafford, presented the captain with a plaque of the Trafford crest to be mounted on the ship. HMS Boxer was the eighth ship to bear the name: the first was a gunboat built in 1797. The ship was decommissioned in 1999.
