Part of an old Manchester South Junction and Altrincham railway six-wheeled passenger coach, showing a windowless compartment containing a large bellows-like apparatus for adding coal gas for the purpose of lighting the train. These gas holders were filled at the station by means of a pipe connection and collapsed as the gas was used.
