James Joule Memorial

1905
Archives
James Joule died in 1889 and towards the end of his life lived in Wardle Road in Sale. To commemorate his connection with the town of Sale it was proposed to build a tower to be used for meteorological observations in Sale Park. Despite a public appeal for funds, support was limited and it was decided that a bronze bust of Joule would be more suitable. The Manchester sculptor John Cassidy was commissioned to carry out the work and the statue was completed in 1905 and unveiled on 28th October 1905. The memorial is located in Worthington Park in Sale; there is also a plaque commemorating his life and work in Sale Town Hall. Images TL9909 and TL1826 available on Trafford Lifetimes
