Part of Stretford Road in Urmston was once known as Gammershaw Lane. Legend has it that an old woman who lived in one of the cottages, had a large stock of gold stored in her house. One day 2 men broke into the cottage and murdered the woman in an attempt to steal the gold. The men were caught and punished for their crime by hanging in gibbet irons in the lane where the murder took place. The boggart, a spirit, is supposed to haunt the area.
