St Paul's Church, which is in the Bowdon Deanery in the Diocese of Chester, was opened in 1883 to serve the growing population of Sale. It was designed by H R Price of Manchester, with the tower being completed in 1910. Its parish formed an area between the Bridgewater Canal and the High Road, and included the most densely populated area of Sale. One of the early worshippers at the Church was James Prescott Joule and the pew he used to occupy is marked with a brass plaque.
