The first record of a school in Sale occurs in a document of 1667 which refers to a schoolhouse lately erected on the commons of Sale 'for the better education, instruction and learning of young children'. In the 18th century 2 cottages belonging to women living on Springfield Road, who became paupers, were taken over for use as a school. In around 1810 a new school on School Road was built by public subscription with a donation from the Duke of Bridgewater. The township school was supported by an endowment of £25 15s per annum and a payment for each child. In the mid 19th century, pupils were taught reading, writing arithmetic and book-keeping, history and geography, with the addition of sewing and knitting for the girls.
