Thomas Henshaw, who died in 1810, left in his will £20,000 to accumulate as an endowment for a blind asylum at Old Trafford, twenty-four years after his death a public subscription was started to provide a building fund and in 1834 the first stone was laid by William Grant - one of Dicken's Cheeryble brothers.
