Metropolitan-Vickers, or Metro-Vicks, was a major employer in Trafford Park. The Company first arrived at the Park in 1899 under the name Westinghouse, which became British Westinghouse. The water tower was constructed at a cost of £1,250,000. The tower was built to supply sufficient water at a uniform pressure for operating hydraulic lifts and a sprinkler system. It was partly taken down in 1940 in order to stop it being used as a landmark by German bombers during the Second World War. The rema
