The Stretford Coat of Arms was granted in 1933. The lion in the centre of the shield stands for John of Gaunt while the red roses are county emblems of Lancashire. Between the roses, the flail is from the arms of the Trafford family and the scythe indicates agriculture. The ship, or lymphad, represents Stretford's connection with the sea by means of the Rivers Mersey and Irwell and the Manchester Ship Canal.
